Kew Pond needs help!

Did you know that the pond next to Kew Green – often seen with a wonderful array of birdlife – needs to be filled every month? The pond is thought to date back to the time of the Norman Conquest and used to naturally fill up from a creek on the Thames. It became part of a fisher in the 10th century but by the 18th century had become a horse pond – a place for riders and horse-drawn carriages to let their horses drink and cool down after a long journey. Cattle and livestock also used the pond which made it unsanitary. Because of this, there were calls to have it filled in, but it has been saved many times. Local volunteers planted it up and also open and close the value into the river every month, to allow it to fill up. If you would like to volunteer to help maintain and fill the pond email:
