A warm welcome awaits at Gazette in Putney – relaxed French brasserie…
The staff welcomed us into the warmly lit cosy restaurant with wines and books displayed along with nostalgic French memorabilia – even an accordion! On a cold Monday night it took us back to warm French evenings, there were several other tables already full, so a good buzz and a bar to sit at if you just fancied an aperitif. My friend, Jo, who had lived north of Nice, was well versed in this cuisine and happy to join me.
Gazette offers a really varied menu of classic French dishes from les escargots to moules-frites, tarte tomate as well as ‘savoury and sweet brunch’ breakfasts with a French twist. While choosing, the guests at the next table had a steak tartare prepared and spiced at their table – a nice touch and a bit of theatre for this classic French dish.
A Monday special was Chateaubriand with frites and salad for £14.50, excellent value. Whilst very appealing, Jo settled for the smaller Bavette steak, frites and green beans. This arrived on a rustic wooden platter – it had great flavour. As Alsace was the featured region I chose choucroute à l’Alsacienne – a hearty plate of rustic pork shank, Alsatian roasted pork belly, f rankfort and new potatoes on a bed of sauerkraut – delicious comfort food. Earthy red wines – Colombaud from Provence and Cotes du Rhone – matched perfectly.
A nice touch is you can write your own personal message on the tables in chalk – a fun idea for kids and grown-ups!
No French dinner is complete without chocolate, so Jo made a beeline for pot au chocolat with freshly made madeleines – the chocolate texture and taste was perfect. Instead of my usual weakness for an espresso martini, I chose Café Liégeois coffee ice cream, expresso and cream – very indulgent and generous. It was a perfect end to Monday.
A short stroll from East Putney station and not far from the River Thames, the restaurant is ideal for brunch or lunch if you’re thinking of watching the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race on 7 April.
