Shire horses of Richmond Park

Story of the Shires
A new book, The Last Herd, tells the story of London’s last working Shire horses, which are often seen in Richmond Park and in the grounds of royal palaces such as Hampton Court. In 1893, London had almost 40,000 shire horses, many used in the brewery trade or even delivering coal for the steam engines which would replace them. There are now eight. The book, by award-winning photojournalist, Paul Stewart, records a year in the life of what is now London’s last herd.
